Recognized since a National Recreation Trail, the Pinellas Trail will go through communities both urban and quaint, passing county parks, residential and coastal locations. In 2008, a only two.5 mile extension attached the trail with downtown St. Petersburg; future extensions will extend the trail to 47 miles (thereby passing the Withlacoochee Trail like Florida'utes longest).

Popular with walkers, joggers, cyclists and in-line skaters, the Pinellas Trail is also employed by commuters. A series of bridges over busy intersections in the southern section from the trail affords risk-free passage to the rider, while offering raised sights of urban landscapes. Proceeding northbound, natural places include reside oaks hung with Spanish moss, waterways and tidal basins, along with many varieties of birds.

The southern terminus in the Pinellas Trail is truly at the intersection of 1st Ave. Utes. and Bay Shore Dr. in previous downtown St Petersburg. Just across Bay Shore Dr. is Demens Landing Park. A short ride through the park takes the rider to the great view of Tampa Bay. The trail ends north of Tarpon Springs, driving parallel to US 19, to North Jasmine Avenue, then next to Melon Street to the final at Keystone Road.

While no "trailheads," there will be ample parking and many amenities down the length of the trail - benches, water fountains, and restrooms. Restaurants, accommodations, shops, historical avenues, bike shops and more are available in the adjoining towns.

Maintenance and amenities are contributed by Pinellas County and Pinellas Trails, Inc., a citizens group. Security will be provided through the sheriff's office, park rangers, and volunteers. Some locations in to the south St. Petersburg are in senior industrial neighborhoods, and riders are advised to become cautious. Marker signs every five hundred feet along the trail can be used for calculating range or reporting difficulties.

Coming from downtown, the trail extends past Tropicana Field and through a good industrial area. Moving north, the Cross Bayou Bridge over Boca Ciego Bay is particularly picturesque. The trail passes through Largo then in Clearwater, it operates on sidewalks with handful of markings. Dunedin is a quaint area with dining places, shops, restrooms, and plenty of parking. The Honeymoon Island spur leads to parks, Gulf of Mexico beaches, picnicking and regular food. A lot more gulf views could be seen at Palm Harbor before arriving at Tarpon Springs, famous for its own sponging industry and Greek consuming places, along with parking, shops, restrooms and hotels. The Pinellas Trail extends another only two.5 miles past Tarpon Springs to their terminus.
